Two years in the making. Now ready for production.
It took a little over two years, but we can finally announce that our Precision Billet 6061-T6 Aluminium Brembo 18Z to Nissan Z32 300ZX Brake Caliper Adapter Brackets, have officially made it into production.
When we made the decision to fit Brembo 18Z Front Brake calipers & 370Z 355mm Rotors to Project Fairlady, we started researching what was already available on the market.
What we found was, quite frankly, disappointing.
The available options raised serious concerns around engineering quality, fastening methods, alignment and overall design. With an engineering background, I couldn't simply overlook these issues, particularly when we're talking about components responsible for locating and securing a brake caliper.
So, rather than compromise, we decided to design our own.
Engineering the Right Way
Before getting into the design of our brackets, it's important to understand one of the fundamental differences between our approach and many of the alternatives we encountered.
Caliper Fastening
At first glance, using a conventional nut-and-bolt arrangement to attach a brake caliper may seem straightforward. However, this approach creates several compromises in a tightly packaged automotive braking system.
Our brackets utilise precision machined threaded holes, allowing the caliper to be securely fastened directly into the billet adapter.
This approach provides several important engineering advantages.
1. Packaging & Tool Access
The area around a brake caliper and wheel hub is extremely confined.
A conventional nut-and-bolt arrangement requires additional clearance behind the mounting point for both the nut and the tooling required to hold it while tightening or loosening the fastener.
Our threaded design eliminates this requirement.
The caliper can be installed and removed from one side using a single tool, making installation significantly simpler, particularly in the confined space behind a wheel.
2. Precision Alignment
A brake caliper must be positioned extremely accurately relative to the brake rotor.
Even small errors in axial or radial positioning can affect rotor to caliper alignment, pad contact and ultimately brake performance and wear.
Our adapter brackets are CNC machined from 6061-T6 aluminium, with the critical mounting features produced in a controlled machining process.
This allows the caliper mounting holes and hub mounting features to be positioned with extremely tight tolerances, while minimising the additional tolerance stack-up that can be introduced by multiple interfaces.
The result is precise and repeatable caliper positioning relative to the rotor.
3. Thread Engagement & Clamping
Our brackets have been specifically designed with sufficient material thickness to provide substantial thread engagement.
Both the 14 mm and 12 mm fasteners achieve more than 1.7× bolt diameter thread engagement, providing a large load bearing thread area within the billet material.
This helps distribute the clamping load and provides substantial resistance to thread damage under the cyclic loads experienced during braking.
The brackets also allow the use of appropriate thread-locking compounds where required, with the fastener and threaded interface protected within the machined component rather than relying on an exposed nut-and-bolt arrangement.
4. Load Management & Positive Location
Brake calipers are subjected to significant forces during heavy braking.
The mounting system therefore needs to provide both substantial clamping force and accurate, repeatable positioning.
Our design focuses on maintaining a rigid and precisely located connection between the caliper, adapter and hub assembly.
The objective isn't simply to make the caliper physically fit.
It is to ensure that the caliper is correctly positioned, securely retained and consistently located relative to the rotor.
